Why a conference dedicated to OpenAlex?
Launched in 2021, OpenAlex is disrupting the ecosystem of bibliographic and bibliometric databases. Running counter to commercial databases based on a limited corpus and proprietary data, it seeks to offer the broadest, most diverse, and most open content possible. The emergence of OpenAlex raises not only the question of substituting one bibliographic tool for another; it invites a paradigm shift by questioning the openness and quality of this data as well as its uses.
OpenAlex harvests, aggregates and enriches various open data sources such as Crossref, Datacite, Pubmed and institutional repositories. The extracted data, such as publication metadata, authors and their affiliations, are then interconnected via persistent identifiers (DOI, ORCID, ISSN, etc.) and exposed in indexes: works, authors, institutions, funders, and sources.
Through these innovative processes, OpenAlex offers better geographic, linguistic and disciplinary coverage, thus providing a less biased picture of international scientific output. This approach nevertheless poses challenges that an increasing number of institutions are willing to take on.
This first French-speaking conference dedicated to OpenAlex aims to improve awareness of the database among French-speaking research and higher education stakeholders, to provide an overview of initiatives and use cases around OpenAlex, and to foster a community of institutional users.
The conference is structured in two parts. The morning will be devoted to institutions' feedback on their daily use of OpenAlex. The afternoon will focus on the new perspectives offered by the database and the sustainability challenges of open research infrastructures.
The event will take place exclusively online. Registration is free and required.
The sessions will be recorded and made available at a later date.
